NeXpose Community members,
One of the most frequent feature requests we've received from you is 32-bit Windows XP support. In response to that demand, Rapid 7 is releasing an alpha of NeXpose Community Edition with 32-bit Windows XP support to the community.
We're hoping many of you will download the alpha, test it out, and let us know how it goes. You can download the alpha here:
http://community.rapid7.com/redmine/projects/1/wiki/Windows_XP_Alpha
Please note: This installer is for testing only. There will be no supported upgrade path from this installer, so limit your use of this version of the product for testing only.
Other important notes and activation instructions can be found on the following NeXpose Community Wiki page:
http://community.rapid7.com/redmine/projects/1/wiki/Windows_XP_Alpha
We will also be tracking the alpha test's progress through this page and have provided numerous suggestions for specific things you can try to help us ensure that we've got all the important stuff covered.
The reason why we are releasing an alpha is that this release features a substantial change in the networking code that NeXpose uses for scanning. Normally on Windows we use the standard Windows network stack for scanning. However, with Windows XP, Windows 7, and Vista, Microsoft incorporated restrictions in accessing raw sockets (see http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms740548(VS.85).aspx). This puts some significant limitations on performance and makes scanning from these OSes extraordinarily slow. We've fixed that, but want to get your feedback to make sure we got it right.
If you have any issues or feedback (positive or negative), please send a note to the nexpose-users mailing list. So, please, let everyone know how it goes, and we look forward to hearing from all of you!
